Hospitality at Home - Story # 2

I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. Psalm 50:11

God is a mystery and makes no sense at all.

I do think he has a sense of humor and chuckles while he watches over us. I imagine him sitting on his throne in heaven with the earth as his ottoman. Every once in awhile, he'll lean over to one of his angels or other holy creatures and say, "Watch this guys, I'm about to blow her mind."

That's what happened to me this weekend. I had plans to work around the house, getting ready to host summer visitors when Dania called me. "Mom, what're you doing?"

"Just working around the house, why?"

"Well, I think Cindy's* got lice."

"Ohhhh. Ok, bring her on over and let me check."

"Yeah, that's what I told her. We're on the way."

Poor Cindy. She was miserable and totally grossed out. But as for me? I felt a surge of joy as I sat her down in a chair and looked over the crown of her head. I was amazed! She had the worst case of lice I'd ever seen - well over a hundred.

The first night, it took me five hours to pick the egg sacks out of her long hair. The next morning, we spent another three hours together as I did it again, in the light of the sun. Today, it will probably take me another three hours.

But here's the part that blows my mind. I still have an unexplainable joy about this and, this is the most important part, it's bonded us together. I've been praying for this child for thirteen years and have never been able to connect like this...until now.

I never imagined using my skills as a nit-picker would be the type of hospitality I'd offer. And I never thought lice would be the medium through which he'd answer a prayer, but as I said before, he's a mystery.

All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
  Psalm 25:10

  1. ooh, my first thought was "AAAHHH is she staying at your house??" Flashback to last Christmas while I was freaking out washing every cloth item we owned in very hot water and spending hours picking through Kristen's hair. Bless you for your kindness to this girl. God uses you in so many different ways because you are so open to His leading. I love that about you!

  2. Thanks for the nice comments. I truly wouldn't be so gracious if it wasn't for Jesus' foot washing example. I figure, this is the kind of stuff he would have done, and in fact dealt with during his healings of skin diseases, etc.
